Building Energy Intensity (BEI)

Intro

The BEI Benchmarking platform is Malaysia’s official digital initiative supporting the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act (EECA). Developed under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA) and Suruhanjaya Tenaga, the website introduces a nationwide Building Energy Intensity (BEI) labelling system to drive energy efficiency in commercial buildings. It targets key sectors such as offices, hospitals, hotels, educational institutions, and retail spaces, aligning with Malaysia’s goal of carbon neutrality by 2050.

Challenge

The primary challenge was structuring a large volume of technical, regulatory, and policy-based content in a user-friendly way. Additionally, a digital transformation of the previously paper-based BEI submission form was required, making it both accessible and functionally accurate for six different industry sectors, each with distinct calculation formulas.

Solution

We designed a clean, accessible website that organizes critical BEI information into structured, readable sections for both general users and energy professionals. A custom-built online BEI Calculator was developed to handle sector-specific input and auto-calculate BEI ratings in real-time, transforming what was once a manual process into a fast, error-free digital experience. Admins can now collect and manage submissions easily, while users benefit from instant results, improved compliance readiness, and an overall streamlined process.
